What is BVN?

The Bank Verification Number (BVN) is a biometric identification system created by CBN to reduce incidents of compromise on conventional security systems. The responsibility for enrolment was handed over to the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS).


How many digits is the BVN

The BVN is eleven (11) digits in length. It is a Universal Identification Number for all banks in Nigeria. It is the same length as the GSM number for individuals in Nigeria.

You can easily check your BVN using by initiating an Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) session from your mobile phone. Thanks to this easy method, very fast and it responds in less than 10 seconds. You do not need to have a high-end Smartphone.

Dialing the USSD number from any type of phone with a sim card will return with a response.  If you provided this number while you were enrolling, it will return with your BVN. If it was enrolled properly if it wasn’t, it won’t return with a response.  However, each of the session initiated there is a fee attached. This will be deducted from your phone number. If you use MTN, simply dial *565*0#. The BVN will appear on the screen of the mobile phone in less than 10 seconds. Initiating this USSD session will cost you 10 Naira. For every time you initiate a request, you will have to pay. So it is very good you write or save it somewhere.



How to check BVN using your phone with Airtel.

Just dial *565*0# from your mobile phone if you use Airtel. In less than 10 seconds, the BVN will display on the screen of your phone. This session from your mobile phone will cost you 10 Naira every time you initiate it.



How to check BVN using your phone with 9 Mobile.

For a user of 9 mobile, simply dial *565*0#  from the number you submitted while enrolling for your BVN at the bank. In less than 10 seconds, the session will return with the 11 digit number. This will cost you a session fee of 10 Naira.



How to check BVN using your phone with GLO.

Simply dial *565*0# from your GLO line, it will return with the BVN number. This will cost you 10 naira. It is advisable to save it if you do not wish to continue paying every time you check.


You should note that if you do not have airtime on your line, you will only get an error when you initiate a USSD session. If the line you are using to initiate is not the number you used to register, you won’t see your BVN through this method.

For all banks, GTBank, WEMA, Access, First, UBA, Providus, Stanbic IBTC, Fidelity, Zenith, Unity, Citi, Polaris, Heritage, FCMB, Union, Eco, Keystone, Polaris, Standard Chartered, Sterling, Suntrust and others.

You can easily check your BVN by dialing *565*0#.  This will return with the desired request. However, some of these Banks display your BVN once you log in to the banking App or to Internet banking. This service comes at no cost except a little bit of your data.
